Emerging indie singer-songwriter Lachlan Edwards caught our attention with his soulful voice and poignant lyrics.
Hailing from Newcastle, NSW, Australia, Lachlan burst onto the music scene with his live debut at only 14 years old. Since then, he has toured and performed all around Australia and opened for many established artists, all while building a loyal following on social media. Three years later, Lachlan has a successful debut EP “Once More” under his belt, and his single, “Little Things,” has earned him the coveted number one spot on Triple J’s Unearthed Roots chart. This achievement marks a significant benchmark in Lachlan’s career and proves that his sound has officially been introduced to the world.
We did a quick Q&A with Lachlan to chat about his music and what inspires him.
SSW: For those just discovering your music, can you tell us a little bit about yourself and your background?
LE: My names Lachlan Edwards and I’m from Newcastle on the east coast of Australia. I’m 17 years old and have been playing music for about 3 years.
What type of music did you grow up listening to? Who has had the greatest influence on your taste in music over time?
I grew up listening to all kinds of music, mainly 2000’s pop, but around 12 I started getting into the more indie kind of music. Overall the biggest influence on my music would’ve had to have been Ziggy Alberts. Listening to his songs and his stories made me want to write.

How would you describe your sound in terms of feelings?
This is kind of a tricky one. I guess it’s kind of, happy-sad music. If that makes sense hahaha.
You released your debut EP “Once More” in January! Can you tell us a little bit about the record and how the writing process has been?
The “Once More” EP was basically meant to be a collection of 5 songs, some of my favorite songs I’ve written over the previous 12 months. My manager and I came up with a list of songs, but on the first day in the studio and being myself I completely ignored the list and recorded a song I’d written the week before called ”Me and You”, which turned out to be my favorite track off the EP.
“Grow” is the most recent single out of your EP, and it’s a song that immediately stood out to us because of its beautiful melody and heartfelt lyrics. Could explain how this song came together creatively?
“Grow” was one of those songs that I wrote and forgot about, until I found it a few months later, worked on it a little bit and liked it enough to record it.
What’s been the most exciting experience you’ve had so far in the music industry?
Having the opportunity to support such awesome artists has been such a good experience, and I’m so grateful for those chances.
Has anyone ever given you any important advice for starting out your career that really stuck with you?
The one thing that has really stuck with me is just sticking with it no matter what.
The music industry has been severely impacted by the current global situation, and all of us have had to adapt and adjust our lives and plans. Have your plans for music releases changed? Have you found any new and creative ways to reach your audience?
Yeah, for sure. I was definitely planning on recording some new songs this year, and I hope to still do that, but for now I’m doing live streams on Instagram and putting up as much online content as possible which is super important.

Let’s talk more about your personal journey. What is the hardest lesson you’ve learnt in life so far?
Just not letting things get you down and always staying positive and optimistic! There will always be things that happen that will not go your way, but if you can push through them, the grass is always greener on the other side.
Growing as a person, you will always encounter challenges that require leaving your comfort zone to try things that scare you. What scares you? Is there anything new and exciting you’d like to try?
Definitely, some things are always scary in this industry and relying on music as a career can be very daunting at times like right now. But you just get on with it. I’d love to have a band play with me because jamming with my mates is so much fun, and it would be awesome to bring that to some of my live performances.
We’ve got one last question for you! Thinking of yourself as a soul on Earth, what do you think your purpose is?
Music is where my heart lies. Writing, performing…I love bringing people together with my music, and it is one of the biggest joys that comes out of it, so yeah it’s definitely playing music!
