Charlotte Cardin – Phoenix

Internationally acclaimed singer-songwriter Charlotte Cardin released her highly anticipated debut album Phoenix, available via Atlantic Records. One of Canada‘s brightest talents, the Montréal-born singer delivered the 13-track collection, alongside the visually breathtaking video for “Anyone Who Loves Me”. Phoenix is a compilation of previously released tracks (“Sad Girl”,”Passive Aggressive”, “Daddy” & “Meaningless) and brand new songs. The record truly exemplifies Cardin’s skills as a songwriter and storyteller.

Speaking about the writing process, Charlotte reveals: “Every single song on Phoenix has its own story, but one thing that ties the whole album together is that it was the first time I turned to co-writing. When I started working on the album, I was writing from my apartment, on my own, I was super possessive of my tunes and I was afraid of letting people in. I got to a point where it felt like I wasn’t really going anywhere. So I started writing with my manager Jason [Brando], who knows me better than I know myself and provided a safe space for me to really explore parts of myself that I wouldn’t otherwise have gone to. He helped me understand my trigger mechanisms and grow past them, which made the whole process liberating and the result is way more personal than if I had written on my own. The whole creative process was interactive”.

On the album, the singer adds: “I have always been torn between my true desires and what I chose to present to the world. This conflict of will has gotten me to feel very empty at a young age and is still something I struggle with. Making this album took two years, because I started the writing process trying to keep control over what I wanted to show. It eventually became obvious, though, that I needed to embrace accessing those true impulses for my music (and my life) to make any sense whatsoever. The more I realized certain things about myself in the process, the angrier I got for not understanding them earlier. This conflicting loop of shame versus growth gave birth to ‘Phoenix.’”
